Josh at Bat

Josh hit a triple just a few moments before, but at this new development in the game, he’s leaping skyward, arms up, shouting with such wild exuberance. Josh learned yesterday of his nomination for the Farm League All-Star team, but even that accomplishment didn’t earn this kind of joyful reaction—and I ought to know, since I had attended almost every game since his tee-ball league three years ago.
His teammate’s arcing foul ball flew over the backstop, and Josh watched the ball’s trajectory with bent legs, crouching lower and lower as it descended ever so liltingly toward the parking lot. Such hope, such promise all tucked into that poised trim body. And then plunk!
Ernest Lawrence Thayer might describe it thus:
Today, there is joy in Mudville,
Though the team, I’m afraid didn’t win.
Yet today the children are smiling, laughing;
Some of them even leap.
And Josh is a hero at last among his peers.
For his friend’s foul ball has landed squarely,
On the hood of my Jeep.
